Vigor 2110 Series Router/Firewall

The DrayTek Vigor 2110 Series routers are designed to be the ideal cable-broadband sharing and firewall device for to the SoHo (Small Office / Home) user. The Vigor2110 series is the cable-modem version of the - PC Advisor's wireless router of the year 2011. The Vigor2110 combines compatibility with cable modem Internet (from Virginmedia) and other Ethernet fed Internet connections together with performance, features and price into an attractive, relible and easy-to-use product, with the pedigree and thoughtful design DrayTek are renowned for. Wireless (WiFi) and VoIP equipped models further enhance the flexibility of the router and outgoing VPN makes it ideal as a teleworker router for your home VPN link to your main office.

A new style case for this range provides stylish looks and space saving design, allowing upright desk usage or wall-mounting. Cleverly conceived cable entry points also minimuse the overall size of the unit. The Vigor 2110 isn't just for cable-modem lines; you can instead use a 3G modem from any of the main carriers (Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone etc.) for Internet connectivity instead of a cable-modem. Wireless LAN Features ('n' Models only)

The Vigor 2110 Series routers with built-in Wireless LAN ('n' models) allow you to use your wireless equipped computers or laptops wirelessly, without needing a cable back to the router; this provides convenience and mobility in your home or office. By adding an additional Vigor 2110 wireless model, you can expand the wireless range using WDS (in repeater mode). For increased range/coverage, DrayTek have a range of directional aerials (see 'accessories').

VoIP Capability ('V' Models only)

The Vigor 2110 Voice-over-IP equipped models provides a phone port allowing you to connect any regular telephone (cordless or corded) to make and receive voice calls using your Internet connection. Using industry standard SIP-protocols, this enables you to make free Internet calls to any other compapible SIP user, or calls to the regular phone network (PSTN / Landlines / Mobiles) via a VoIP gateway service such as DrayTEL (or any other SIP compliant service).

You can make free calls to or from other compatible VoIP users worldwide and via a PSTN gateway, such as DrayTEL you can make calls to any regular telephone line or mopbile phone worldwide, at low DrayTEL rates. DrayTEL will also allocate you your own normal phone number for anyone to call you on. (Note : DrayTEL is operated independently of DrayTek Corp.). You can use any other VoIP providers too, as long as they are "SIP compliant". Pre-set 'QoS assurance' automatically gives priority to VoIP traffic so that call quality is maximised from your available Internet bandwidth. Selectable codecs allow you to tune your ideal VoIP parameters for best call quality and bandwidth use.

POTS & VoIP Access from one phone

In addition to VoIP calls, the Vigor2110Vn model connects to your regular analogue phone line ("POTS") too so with just a single phone on your desk, you can choose to make calls using VoIP via the Internet or switch over to your POTS line (your normal phone line) and dial out via the PSTN (the conventional phone network). By setting up the LCR (Least Cost Routing) facility, you can automate this process so that the router automatically sets your preferred route for calls, according to your own rules. Then, depending on the destination dialled, the router will use either your POTS line or one of up to 6 VoIP/SIP providers/gateways (for example DrayTEL).

Incoming calls can be received too - either from POTS or VoIP - the phone will ring on either. With automatic failover, in the event of power loss, the Vigor automatically switches your phone over to the POTS line so that you can still make/receive calls. Additionally, if you have a VoIP phone number (SIP Address) in the speed dial memory, you can also specify a backup phone number for each entry, so in the event of Internet loss, the router will automatically dial an alternative number via your regular telephone line.

Network Attached Storage (NAS)

The Vigor 2110 Series's USB port can also be used to add storage memory to the unit in the form of a USB memory key (as shown right) or for higher capacity a USB hard drive (normally requires its own power). The Vigor 2110 then provides FTP access file uploading/downloading which can be from the local LAN or from anywhere on the Internet - ideal for a simple to deploy file depository. Access can be 'public' or using usernames and passwords, each of which can have their own directories and/or file access rights. As well as FTP, file sharing is available as a Windows 'network drive'. Using Internet Explorer, you can access, read and write the contents of the USB drive.

The NAS facility uses any FAT16 or FAT32 formatted device (includes USB memory sticks, USB hard drives etc.)

Web Content Filtering

The Vigor 2710 Series also features Web Content Filtering, allowing you to block web sites or content by keyword matching, content file type or by using DrayTek's new GlobalView site cetegorisation system (subject to subscription).

DrayTek Web Filtering allows you to block web content in three main ways:

1. By matching keyword / specific sites
2. By web site category (Subject to Subscription)
3. By digital content type
4. IP Filtering (Actually part of the firewall, along with many other security features.)

Features 1,3 and 4 above are included with the router. Feature 2 is included but requires an annual subscription to the external server which keeps a real-time contstantly updated database of web sites. More details of that later.

1. Keyword Matching

In Keyword Matching you can specify a list of either banned (blacklist)) or permitted sites (whitelist). The DrayTek method is 'object' oriented, which means that you create lists of keywords or sites, can then group them and then apply them into specific user groups or time periods

Using a blacklist, all sites would be accessible by your users except those that match the keywords you specify. This would be useful, for example where there are specific sites known to be causing distuption or timewasting in your organsiation such as social networking or webmail. The example below would allow access to all sites except the ones listed:

A whitelist, on the other hand, is much more restrictive on what your users can access as it blocks all web sites by default and then only allows access to web sites which match your keywords. This is useful when you really want to lock down your Internet access to only allow very specific web site access. The example below would block access to all web sites except those listed:

The URL blacklist and whitelist feature is included as standard on all supported DrayTek routers.

2. Web Site Category (DrayTek GlobalView)

DrayTek's GlobalView allows you to select specific categories of web site which your router will allow access to. For example, an office may wish to block access to social networking or other company-time wasting sites or a home user might want to block adult sites from their children

GlobalView covers 64 separate categories which you can select as blocked or permitted. Every time one of your users attempts to access a site, the router's automatically queries the central GlobalView server to ascertain its classification. This takes only milliseconds. If a site is blocked by GlobalView, according to the categories you have selected, instead of the requested web page, a warning message is displayed to the user (you can customise the message).

The GlobalView central database is continuously updated with new sites and changes to sites but also records normally legitimate sites which have become compromised or contain malware (a unique feature to GlobalView). Access to the GlobalView server requires an annual subscription. A free 30-day trial is included with all new routers so that you can try the feature out before subscribing. Scroll down the box below to see the 64 different categories which can be blocked by GlobalView, either permanently or at certain times of day/week according to your chosen schedule and for the PCs you choose. GlobalView Categories : Globalview requires an annual subscription, available from your dealer. The subscription covers any number of users connected to your router. For the Vigor 2110 series you need a 'b' type subscription.

3. Digital Content Type

DrayTek's Content filtering allows you to specify particular data types or web content to be blocked by the router. The vigor is pre-set with many different content types or protocols. You can select any or all of them for blocking. There are infinite combinations but some examples of commonly blocked content are:

• Block download of executable (EXE) or compressed (ZIP) files to reduce the chance or virus infection or installation of untested software.
• Block Peer-to-Peer (P2P) software such as BitTorrent, to avoid users using vast amounts of your bandwidth or engaging in media piracy.
• Block HTTP/FTP upload or webmail to prevent theft/espionage of your company data
• At Home, block Instant Messaging protocols to prevent your children from unsupervised chat with strangers.
• Block SMTP from all devices other than your mail server to stop Trojan Zombies

3G Cellular Data Features

All major cellphone networks within Europe now support '3G data'; this uses the latest 3G networks for high-speed data connections to the internet in addition to regular phone calls. The latest 'HSDPA' version provides speeds up to 7.2Mb/s* download, which is comparable with fixed broadband lines but with added flexibility, mobility and convenience. All of the networks supply USB 3G modems (shown on the right); these are typically available 'free' on most monthly data contracts, or to buy on PAYG ('Pay as You Go') packages. In addition, many 3G phone handsets also have a 'modem' facility with a USB cable which is compatible with the DrayTek routers. The 3G USB modem connects directly into a DrayTek router/firewall and provides shared Internet connectivity to all PCs and other devices on your network, including wireless laptops (assuming you select DrayTek product with WiFi).

All models in the Vigor2110 series support 3G modem access to the Internet instead of using a cable-modem. That's ideal for temporary installation, locations where ADSL/cable isn't available or a cheaper alterative to cable-modems (depending on your usage and contract/package). Check with your chosen network provider for their current contractsd or PAYG schemes, as well as the model of USB modem they would supply you with.
